In 2009, Dickey’s Barbecue Pit Inc. announced plans to open its first restaurant in Huntsville, AL. After two years, it started operation in downtown Huntsville in the Riverwalk shopping center. Dickey’s signature menu items include premium beef brisket smoked for 21 hours over hickory; slow-smoked Gouda sausage; premium turkey ribs; Texas-style beef ribs, baby back ribs, pulled pork, pulled chicken and sausage, including a new pulled pork sandwich; and the “Double Down,” which includes two barbecue sandwiches.
Roland Dickey Jr. joined Dickey’s Barbecue Restaurants in March 2016, with his goal of doubling revenues to $300 million within three years. Under his leadership, Dickey’s revenues more than doubled in the first year. In addition, the restaurant had taken the company from 9 states in 2009 to 67 locations today. In 2012, his goal was to open 25 new locations, and he surpassed that goal three years early.
Dickey Inc. was founded by Travis Dickey in 1941, who has always believed in the importance of serving the right kind of barbecue to each customer. Dickey’s was listed at number 12, their highest ranking yet. Over 30 years, they have gained a reputation for truly being, truly bringing Texans, and barbecue lovers alike, the best quality barbecue around.
With more than 470 locations in 44 states, Dickey’s Barbecue Restaurants continues to lead the barbecue industry. In addition, Dickey’s has remained consistent in its support of the military and in celebrating its country’s heroes. In 2016, Dickey’s raised more than $150,000 for veteran’s charities from its annual fundraiser, the Heroes dine-out program.
Roland Dickey Jr. has a long history of running businesses. He’s the son of Roland Dickey Sr., who started the barbecue restaurant as a small market store in 1941. He opened his first Dickey’s Barbecue Pit location in 2003, and just three years later, there were five locations. He also operated as Board’s Chairman and Vice President of Dickey’s Barbecue Restaurants, Inc. until 2011. Then, after taking a break from the company to pursue his other passions, he was asked to return as CEO.
